BASIC USERS A1,A2

The European Framework of Reference describes the A1 and A2 levels as follows:

A1 You can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases. You can introduce yourself and others and can ask and answer personal questions. You can interact in a simple way provided the other person speaks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

The A1 level can be attained in two AFC General French courses (A1.1, A1.2). See schedules and fees for availability or take a Free placement test. If you would like to begin with bonjour, you may register for the A1.1 course online.

A2 You can understand sentences and frequently used expressions about your personal and family information, your city, employment and shopping. You can communicate to perform simple and routine tasks in everyday life. You can describe in simple terms aspects about your background, your immediate surroundings and your basic needs.

INDEPENDENT USERS - B1, B2

If you are looking to deepen your knowledge of the French language, you can continue your learning at the AFC:

B1 You can understand the main points of clear standard French on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school or everyday life. You can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where French is spoken. You can produce simple sentences about topics which are familiar or of personal interest. You can describe your experiences and events, your dreams & your ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

The B1 level can be attained in four AFC General French courses (B1.1, B1.2, B1.3, B1.4). See schedules and fees for availability or take a Free placement test. If you're a returning student to the AFC and are not sure what your level is, check our level equivalency chart.

B2 You can understand the main ideas in complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical writing in your field. You can interact with a certain degree of fluency which makes regular interactions with native speakers possible without strain for you. You can make clear, detailed statements on a wide range of subjects and explain your point on familiar issues both in writing and speaking.
