Alliance Française Calgary - Private Tour - Military Museums

Far From Home, Close to History

War Stories Through Art

Did you know Calgary is home to Canada’s second-largest military museum? This exceptional site unites eight museums under one roof, including the Naval, Army, and Air Force Museums of Alberta, the Air Force Cold War Museum, and regimental museums like Lord Strathcona’s Horse, PPCLI, The King’s Own Calgary Regiment, and The Calgary Highlanders. It also features the UCalgary Founders' Gallery and its renowned Library & Archives.

The Alliance Française and Calgary Accueil invite you to a guided tour of two extraordinary war art exhibitions on Sunday, February 9th at 3 p.m.:

  • Far from Home: Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry – 110 Years of Art
Explore the 110-year history of the PPCLI regiment, from its creation by Montreal philanthropist Hamilton Gault to its heroic presence during the First World War and vital peacekeeping missions.
  • Witness: Histories of Conflict in Bill MacDonnell’s War Art
Immerse yourself in the powerful works of Bill MacDonnell, whose large-scale paintings capture the essence of 20th-century conflicts—from WWI to Afghanistan. Through a mix of realism, metaphor, and abstraction, MacDonnell offers a unique and thought-provoking perspective on war, empire, and power.

The tour will be conducted in English by Mr. Dick Averns, curator, artist, and war correspondent who was deployed alongside Canadian troops during several Middle Eastern missions.

Since the museum remains open until 5:00 PM, we invite you to follow this program (included in the ticket price):

  • Before 3:00 PM: Explore the museum’s permanent exhibits at your own pace.
  • 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM: Guided tour of the temporary exhibitions with Dick Averns.
  • 4:00 PM – 5:00 PM: A delightful reception with pastries, hot beverages, and juice, offered to all tour participants in the museum's reception hall.
