This Kingcake, a staple of Epiphany festivities in France and Quebec, is a bakery favorite throughout January. It's not just a cake; it's a cultural experience! The ritual of "drawing the kings" to the Epiphany is integral to its charm.
Hidden within this delectable treat is a small trinket, la fève, which might be anything from a miniature automobile to an animated figure. The lucky individual who discovers this figurine in their slice is crowned king or queen for a day, with the fun responsibility of providing the next Galette des Rois.
Interestingly, la fève, which now refers to a variety of tiny collectible figures made from porcelain or plastic, started as an actual broad bean (fève) until around 1870. Don't miss out on this quintessentially French tradition!
